Nimal Munasinghe
Introduction
Nimal is a 67-year-old amputee from the Mathale district. He grew up in a family of farmers and attended the village school up to the 8th grade. Before losing his leg, he spent his days cultivating paddy fields and visiting the temple.
As his wife passed away one year ago, Nimal now lives with his 4 children and is supported by his sister.
“I bumped my toe on a rock and got a wound. Over the next few months, the wound got worse and I started to get pain in my leg,” he said when reflecting on his amputation. “I went to the hospital, and they first amputated my big toe. After staying in the hospital for three months, I came home. The leg pain continued, and I went back to the hospital. Then they decided to remove my leg. I had to give up farming.”
A prosthesis will allow Nimal to more easily perform his activities of daily living. With his newfound independence, he hopes to start a business in sales.
Follow-up (6 months)
What challenges did you face with the new leg?
“Initially I had trouble getting used to the leg, trying to walk in a different way. But after about 3 days, I got the hang of it. I used crutches previously, but now can walk without aide.”
How has receiving the leg impacted your life?
“I am much more independent now. I can take care of my daily needs, like bathing and cooking, by myself. I have been able to socialize, visit family and friends. I can now take the local bus to places which I could not do before. I have been living with my youngest daughter after I lost my leg, but now I am looking into finding my own housing.”
How has it helped with your religious activities?
“I was always very involved with the activities at my local temple. I am happy to say that I am able to engage in religious activities like I used to before I lost my leg.”
Overall, what do you have to say about receiving this leg?
“Getting this leg has been a big relief and emotional comfort to me. I am able to walk and function now almost as if I never lost my leg!”
